Supporting Evidence for CHC Theory

Support for the CHC theory of cognitive abilities has been documented through five major forms of validity evidence (see Horn & Noll, 1997 for recent summary).

Structural Outcome-Criterion Neurocognitive Heritability Developmental

Evidence from over 50 years of factor analytic based individual differences research  Evidence of differential relations between different CHC abilities and external outcomes (e.g., reading, math, occupations, etc.) Evidence that has demonstrated links between CHC measures and physiological and neurological functioning Evidence that has demonstrated differential heritability rates for different CHC abilities Evidence that measures of CHC abilities show different patterns of growth and decline across the life-span

Bibliographies of select literature for each broad CHC ability, by the five forms of validity evidence, can be found via the following links.  The articles included in each list bear on the evaluation of each construct's validity, but do not necessarily provide unanimous support.  The references are provided to help individuals evaluate the available research literature.
