Projects:  Select updates

  • Carroll library - the portion of John B. Carroll's personal professional library that wound up in IAP's lap has been electronically archived with Readerware and is currently in the process of being moved to its final location.  Arrangements have been made to have the collection professionally appraised by John Gach books , a favorite rare book dealer of IAP.  Anyone who has an extensive library might consider having it professionally appraised for insurance purposes and/or for establishing a value if the collection is going to be donated and claimed on your tax return.
  • CHC HCA - The Cattell-Horn-Carroll Human Cognitive Abilities project has formally started.  Click on title for information.
  • Research Projects - the count and amount is now six research strands and 24 research projects.  Information can be found at  http://www.iapsych.com/iapresearch.htm
Projects:  New

  •  IAP has entered into a contract with the University of Minnesota to:
    •  Serve as a hired gun (aka, a measurement consultant) to the National Center on Educational Outcomes (NCEO) regarding technical issues involved in the inclusion of students with disabilities in large scale state and national assessments, and
    • Work on an Institute on Community Integration discretionary OSEP grant project to review the extant literature and produce a white paper on the non-academic/cognitive enabling behaviors that impact the academic and post-school success of students with disabilities.

On the road again

For the chip-heads

  • Visual (Gv) planning tool.     I'm in love.  The Mind Manager visual planning software tool from MindJet is a fantastic tool for anyone who is managing projects, attempting to create concept/idea maps, drafting manuscript outlines, etc.   It is a dream tool for anyone who thinks and plans via their Gv abilities.
  • Norton Upgrade.  If you haven't tried (upgraded to) Norton System Works Professional 2003, you may want to take a peak.  Aside from all the usual computer maintenance and virus protection features, it now has a Ghost feature.  Briefly, this feature allows users to make perfect mirror images of your hard drive, a feature that should allow you to recover from a hard disk disaster without having to reinstall all software 1-by-1.  It also should be useful in those settings where it is important that multiple computers have identical hard drive structures and programs.
Quantoid's Corner

  • AMOS help- We recently upgraded to new notebook computers that run Windows XP.  It has been impossible to install AMOS as an error message indicates that a new "service pack" needs to be installed.  All MS XP service packs have been installed and Smallwaters has not been responsive to our communications.  Any tips, ideas, etc.?
The tangled web

  • Something is happening!  It had been months since we checked the IAP web page hit counter.  When we did, this is what we found.  There is an obvious increasing trend over the past approximately 20 weeks.  Hmmmmm?  Any hypotheses?  We have also noticed that the search keywords that are bringing new folks to the site have changed over time.  The top keywords are now "theory, cognitive, abilities, Cattell-Horn-Carroll, and CHC."  We interpret this finding as an indication that the CHC model is becoming more widely known and recognized.  This has been the result of the work of many people across the country.

  • We try harder.  A long term goal has been to position the IAP web site as the center of the internet regarding CHC theory and assessment information.  A quick search this morning (via Google) using the key words "CHC Theory" or "Cattell-Horn-Carroll" resulted in the IAP being second from the top of the list.  Not bad.  The winner, who is now in our cross-hairs, is the very nice  introductory CHC PowerPoint presentation of John Garruto.  Watch out John...we are gunning for you :)   Like AVIS, we try harder.
